Richard Mason

Since 1988 when I joined Natwest, my career has been focussed on understanding and working with SME’s, particularly around their working capital requirements. In the mid 90’s, I moved into invoice finance, and worked for an innovator in the industry who provided value-added services around sales ledger facilities. This resulted in a diversion into acquisition finance, utilising other assets and government backed funding to assist management teams in acquiring businesses. Following a move to an advisory role in 2007, it became clear that SME’s were struggling to be serviced by the banks and that alternative finance sources were required. With the advent of peer to peer lending, I sourced and completed over 200 deals raising in excess of £30 million to support SME’s in their growth and acquisition ambitions. As the sector has developed, my goal has been to help SME’s navigate through an increasingly wide-ranging finance marketplace – using innovative forms of funding to achieve what the mainstream banks no longer deliver to the SME.
